Minimum Qualifications for Texas Childcare Center Employees & Caregivers


To work in a childcare center in Texas, each employee must meet the following basic requirements:


  1. Background Checks:

  2. Tuberculosis Examination:

    • Employees must have a current record showing they are free of contagious TB, if required by the Texas Department of State Health Services or local health authority.

  3. Employment Affidavit:

    • Employees must complete a notarized Licensing Affidavit for Applicants for Employment form as specified in the Human Resources Code, §42.059.


Additional Qualifications for Caregivers

In addition to the general employee requirements, caregivers must meet the following qualifications:


  1. Age Requirement:

    • Caregivers must be at least 18 years old.

  2. Educational Requirement:

    • Caregivers must have one of the following:

      • A high school diploma

      • A high school equivalent

      • A high school certificate of coursework completion as defined in the Texas Education Code, §28.025(d)
